But all the above examples are fictional because both are from the comics. But in reality, a great philosopher named Plato, a disciple of Socrates created the legend of Atlantis. Plato was a famous philosopher in ancient Greek. He lived in the years between 423 BC to 347 BC. Approximately over 2,500 years ago he wrote about the Atlantis legend. He created the Atlantis legend some 2,000 years ago but why it is still popular now? Does Atlantis really exist?
Introduction to Atlantis
Atlantis is a legendary island nation in Greek Mythology. It was first mentioned by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogues "Timaeus" and "Critias." According to Plato's account, Atlantis was a prosperous and powerful maritime civilization located beyond the Pillars of Hercules (also known as the Strait of Gibraltar) in the Atlantic Ocean.
Society was said to be advanced in science, art, and architecture. Atlantis was ruled by ten kings descended from Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. However, the people of Atlantis became corrupted and arrogant, and their civilization was eventually destroyed in a catastrophic event, sinking beneath the ocean in a single day and night.
Some say that Atlantis in Greek Mythology and Dwarka in Hindu Mythology has some similarities. Both cities drowned in the ocean. But there is no concrete evidence to support the existence of Atlantis, the story of the lost civilization. The civilization has captivated people's imaginations for centuries, leading to countless theories, speculation, and even searches for the sunken city.
The Legend of Atlantis
The legend of Atlantis has been a popular subject of fascination and intrigue for centuries. According to the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, Atlantis was an advanced civilization that existed around 9,000 years ago.
The story tells of a wealthy and prosperous society, with a powerful navy and sophisticated technology, which ultimately fell out of favor with the gods and was destroyed in a catastrophic event.
Despite the lack of any concrete evidence of the existence of Atlantis, the legend continues to capture people's imagination, with countless theories and searches for the sunken city fueling the ongoing fascination with this mythical place.
Historical accounts and references
There are no known historical accounts or references to Atlantis outside of Plato's dialogues. The story of Atlantis is thought to have been a fictional narrative created by Plato to convey his philosophical and moral lessons to his readers.
However, some scholars have suggested that Plato may have based his account on earlier myths and legends from other cultures, such as the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. Crete was destroyed by a volcanic eruption and tsunami. Despite this, there is no evidence to support the existence of Atlantis as a real historical civilization.
Plato's Writings About Atlantis Existence
Plato didn't about civilization or how the people lived in Atlantis or their condition. But in all his writings there's a most famous story that says about the cataclysmic destruction of the ancient civilization of Atlantis. But the story about the cataclysmic destruction came out as false. Then why Atlantis whereabouts are still famous in the present times?
A famous professor of classics at Bard College in New York's Annandale stated that Plato's writings about Atlantis are a story that captures the imagination. As it is a great myth and has a lot of elements that people love to fantasize about.
In Plato's writings, it is mentioned that Atlantis is there around 360 BC. The founders of Atlantis were half god and half human (the same as we see in the movie Aquaman). It is believed that the Atlanteans created a utopian civilization and became a great naval power. The island of Atlanteans was made up of concentric islands that are separated by wide moats (trenches) and linked by a canal that penetrated the center.
These islands contained gold, silver, and many other precious metals. The islands also have an abundance of rare, exotic wildlife. The capital city of Atlantis was on the central island. This is the information that Plato mentioned in his writings.
Other Theories About Atlantis
Not only Plato's theory there are many more theories like that. Where some say that Atlantis was in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Spain. Some even say that Atlantis was under present known Antarctica. Charles Orser famous history curator at the New York State Museum in Albany said that, if you pick any spot on the map, and someone says that Atlantis was there.
Plato said that Atlantis was a city that existed about 9,000 years ago before his own time. He said that the Atlantis story had been passed down by poets, priests, and others. But for the present world, Plato's writings are the only known records about Atlantis.
Some say that there are many resemblances between Dwarka and Atlantis. Both cities were well civilized in their time and both were submerged in the sea. But, archaeologists found the submerged buildings and pillars of Dwarka city. In the same way, did archaeologists find any samples of proof about Atlantis?
Does Atlantis Really Exist?
There are some topics in the world similar to Atlantis that need clarification on whether they exist or not. One such topic is Ram Setu, some say that it is natural and some say that is a man-made tombolo built by Lord Ram. In the same manner, few scientists believe that Atlantis really exists and some say it is a myth.
A US-led research team might have finally located the lost city of Atlantis. They believed that the city was swamped by a tsunami thousands of years ago, in mud flats in southern Spain. Head researcher Richard Freund said that the reason for the vanishing of the city is because of the power of tsunamis. They have the power to wipe out 60 miles of inland and it is difficult to understand the impact.
Richard Freund who was the head of the investigatory team for the original site of Atlantis analyzed the satellite imagery of a suspected submerged city just north of Cadiz, Spain. In the vast buried marshlands of Dona Ana Park, they pinpointed a location that matches the ancient multi-ringed dominion known as Atlantis.
In 2009 and 2010 a team of archaeologists and geologists used a combination of deep-ground radar, underwater technology, and digital mapping to survey the site. In Freund's discovery, it was found an image in central Spain that has a series of strange "memorial cities," built by Atlantis. The images were made by the refugees of Atlantis after the city was destructed by the tsunami. This gave added proof and confidence for the researchers to come to a justification.
He also said that the Atlantean residents who survived the cataclysmic destruction may flee inland and build new cities. In the end, the team concluded that they found the submerged lost city of Atlantis.
